A letter to Chancellor George Osborne: stop cutting our benefits!

Dear Chancellor George Osborne

We’re writing today to ask that you to stop. Stop and listen to what we, the people of the UK, are trying to tell you.

Stop cutting our benefits!

I know a mother called Tamsyn Wood. She is an incredibly strong woman whose life has taken a tragic turn over the last twelve months. Following an accident, her husband Alex is no longer able to work and is totally reliant on our NHS to provide rehabilitation so that he can walk, talk and be able to live with his wife and four children once more.

What happened to Alex could have happened to any one of us. At any one moment, we may find ourselves in the awful position that Tamsyn and Alex now find themselves in. Tamsyn has had to fight for benefits to put food in the mouths of her children and clothes on her back. This is on top of having to cope on a daily basis with the fact that her husband, her soul mate, is no longer the man he once was. He is no longer the father he used to be.

Tamsyn Wood is the tip of the iceberg. There is a much bigger picture to look at, Chancellor Osborne. There are many other people in the UK who are in dire need of help and yet more and more benefits are being cut. There are other mothers, fathers, sons and daughters who, for whatever reason, need some help in order to maintain some quality of life. This is what we pay our taxes for. We are incredulous that you seem to be unable to differentiate between people like Tamsyn, who are in genuine need of your help, and those who are blatantly taking advantage of an unfair system

When you vow to cut £10bn from the benefit system, people like Tamsyn are going to suffer. People like Tamsyn are going to have to tell their children that their father is not coming home and is instead sentenced to a life- at the age of 33!- in a care home. People like Tamsyn are going to have to accept that their government has given up on them.

We will not give up, Chancellor Osborne. We refuse to sit back and accept the fact that real people with real needs are going to suffer because of your plans. You are our chancellor and we need you to listen. We understand that times are tough and cuts need to be made but we need you to understand that the latest proposals have crossed a line. We need you to know that we will not step over that line with you.

We the signatories below are saying: Stop cutting our benefits.

Stop cutting our benefits Chancellor George Osbourne
